I was racking my brain for good ideas for gifts for the girls for their birthday this year and I was having a hard time coming up with anything good. We have so much stuff between the three kids, more toys didn't seem like the best option. So, I decided to convert the little house bookshelf that we inherited from Aunt Gail and Cousin Rachel into a real dollhouse as their big gift this year. The girls have a lot of dolls and stuffed animals, but the ones that they play with the most, every single day, are these 12 inch Corelle dolls from Aunt Carol and from Tia Lindsay. The dollhouse fits them well, but finding furniture was another story. They are technically the same height at barbie, but definitely wider, so much of that furniture doesn't work. The American Doll furniture is too large, as most of those dolls are closer to 14-16 inches tall. Furthermore, the traditional dollhouse furniture is made for dolls between 8-10 inches tall. So....after much searching online, 4 trips to 4 different Targets and 2 different Toys R' Us, this is what I came up with. It still need a few finishing touches, but so far it has kept the girls quite entertained. Phew!!
Before: Very cute bookshelf that was jammed with stuff
After:
Bedrooms- I found cute contact paper in the $1 bins at Target and little beds for the Target Our Generation Doll line. I painted some little side tables from the $1 bin at Michaels, and made some lamps out of egg cartons and dowels.
Kitchen: I used Mod Podge and stuck some craft paper up on the wall. The fridges are Barbie. The table was a gift to the girls awhile ago.
Office: Duct Tape rug, Barbie desk, painted Michaels box for the little bench, and an old pencil box for the bookshelf.
Living Room: I made the rug and pillow with needlepoint (thanks to my monthly Darby Smart craft box for the perfect yarn). The couch is Barbie, and the wallpaper is again just paper glued on.
Bathroom: The one thing I found at the dollhouse store is this adorable blue tile paper for the floor. I used the extra to put in the shower for the Barbie shower to match. The bathtub is some random thing I found around the house, and the picture is just cutout from the Paper Source catalog.
